The Rider-Waite has been setting the standard for tarot since 1909, when Pamela Colman Smith created fully illustrated pictorial scenes for every card of the Major and Minor Arcana under the direction of Arthur Edward Waite. The symbolism is rich and layered, but also legible and welcoming, which is why this deck has introduced more people to tarot than any other. The imagery was developed through Smith’s membership in the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, giving it esoteric depth alongside its accessibility. It is worth noting that the tarot community has increasingly recognized Smith’s central authorship by calling this the Rider-Waite-Smith deck.
