Ana Juan has a painter eye for color and an illustrator instinct for character, and in Tarot Cats she brings both to bear on the full tarot lexicon. Each card is populated by felines who carry the playful independence their species is known for, with a careful use of saturated color that makes each card pop. The deck follows Rider-Waite-Smith symbolism loosely enough to be read by anyone familiar with that tradition, while the wit and visual pleasure of the artwork make it something you want to keep looking at.
Ana Juan studied fine arts at the Universidad Politecnica in Valencia and moved to Madrid in the early 1980s, where she contributed regularly to influential magazines and became one of the few regular female artists at the publication Madriz. She later lived in Paris, Geneva, New York, and Japan before returning to Spain. Her work has earned her the Gold Medal from the Society of Newspaper Design twice and the Premio Nacional de Ilustracion from the Spanish Ministry of Culture. She creates books, illustrates for international publications, and has illustrated book covers for Isabel Allende, among many others.
